Hello,

When starting my motor I am hearing a "ping". The starter is not driving the pin high enough to grab the fly wheel. It normally works after a few tries, but I have heard you can clean the brushes in the assembly. Any tips?

Re: 87 Evinrude Starter

you need to clean the splines on the starter first..thats the shaft the bendix rides on....spray with electro cleaner or brake cleaner just a little do not drench it....then oil it with 3-1 oil..just a drop or 2 does it.....

also make sure all the connections are cleaned..from battery to solenoid to starter....take a scotch brite pad and clean cable ends and studs.... #1 cause of starter problems is dirty connection.....

also rebuilding a starter is very easy... Iboats sells the end cap with the brushes already installed....

but clean the splined shaft and cables first see where that gets you ..may be all you have to do....

do not use wd-40 on shaft..it does gum in time....use a light machine oil like 3-1 oil....
