What is up with this engine? Just bought it two weeks ago. It seems like I've tried everything, but I only get 2000 rpms at wot. She sounds like she's misfiring and knocking in idle. Wierd thing is that last week, I took it out, it ripped across the water at around 5000 rpms (was only going 2000 prior), then when I turned to the left, it bogged down and will only get 2000 rpms. I've got fuel, good spark with new plugs, siphoned old gas and put in new, good compression, taken apart and cleaned carbs, pulled and checked reeds, pulled flywheel and no loose wires underneath, and cleaned the fuel filter. Also, I tried to time it, but I can't get the spark advance far enough without the screw falling out to get to 34 degrees behind the 1 cylinder. If anybody has any ideas, I would be forever in your debt. Thanks!!!

First: You only want 30 degrees before top dead center at WOT and approximately 0 degrees at idle. The important number is 30 at WOT.
Second: Did you re-torque the flywheel to 90 foot pounds? If not adequately tightened, it will shear the flywheel woodruff key (you were certain the key was in and did not slip out of position when you re-attached the flywheel, weren't you?)
There should only be a gap of about 1/2 inch between the two plastic pieces on the timing screw. If the screw is out so far that it falls out of the plastic, then the flywheel is probably out of position on the shaft. That's about the only thing that could have the timing so far out; It is not possible to install the trigger assembly in the wrong position. -----I take that back: I've seen many impossible things done to Force engines------
You are using the correct timing marks aren't you? 0 degrees is a single line and several inches to the left (when looking at it from the boat) on the flywheel is a group of three lines. The long line or the center line is 30 degrees BTDC. This is checked against a mark on the front of the engine on a plate above the top carb.

thanks for the tip on the timing marks. I have it timed at idle at the 1 cylinder. proper torque on flywheel. but the problem remains that it wont go past 2000 at wot. Is it electrical, or possible that its some other, less expensive problem?

Thanks
