If you have a fuel leak I would think you would want it o drain into the bilge area so you could tell you have a problem. If you seal it up, it might be dangerous because of the ventalation(spell check) not only that but then all that gas would build up with nowhere to go.
Thats just what I think. I could be wrong.

That is an interesting question, I don't think I have seen anyone ask it. I would think its very rare to get a hole in one that is properly installed.....but you would want it to drain out somehow. Seems like all the threads I have seen just drain it back to the bilge.

Yes you should have a drain or 2 in the tank area, & tank should sit on rubber strips or blocks, and don't foam the whole tank in either, ina worst case water could build up in the tank area & get into the tank via the sending unit if not allowed to drain.

Thanks SawDust

I was just concerned about the possibility of a flash fire if fuel was going into the bilge/engine compartment. I do understand that it could fill up with water and better to get the water out. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :D

sorry it took me so long to get back to you....my internet is out and it will be a while before they can get there.....(the jerks)

yes....the fuel must drain to the bilge.....

personally i would pull the motor......unless the stringers/motor timbers are good......then just sister them......but in any case i would re check the alignment after you are done.

have you got your wood yet?......gotta get it and start it drying asap...!
the stuff you get from the store is wet and needs to be dryed for a while.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Hey oops! Sorry to hear of your internet problems....

The motor mounts are ok but the stringer on the port side was bad back to the transom. I am planning to install the new stringer back into the glass channel that is existing then putting a piece of plywood under the inside edge to form it out. Then I will cut 2 access holes in the top on either side of the motor mount and fill it solid with Nida Bond to make it all one piece. I think that should be more that enough to hold it secure.

I did get 3/4 plywood and its indoors drying out. I ended up talking to my lumber yard and found out that the ply they stock is underlayment that has solid core and exterior glue....unlike standard CDX ply that has some voids in the plys and knot holes on the faces.

This weekend we will be doing the finishing of the rip out of any unwanted fiberglass and foam, cutting and fitting stringers and bulks and figuring out drains for the ski locker, fuel tank and between stringers. The temps are starting to rise in the 40's so maybe in a week or so it will be getting warm enough to start the glass layup.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Long day on the boat..... found the port side stringer rotted all the way to the bow and since there is no way were pulling the cap, I cut the top of the stringer open and plan to run the stringer as far up as possible and fill the 2 or so feet at the end with Nita Bond. I'm going to cut a barb on the front of the stringer so the Nida bond will fill the notch and lock it together. The fiberglass shell is in good condition so it makes sense to pour it. Tomorow we should be able to dry fit some stringers and bulks.. A lot of grinding today! So much fun!! LOL But it needs to be done.

I have always loved Four Winns.. Thought they was awesome boat after a friend of mine had one.. His was way newer, but a beautiful boat..
So when I found mine for 1k, it was my chance to have one.. My girl bought it for me:p..Now when I picked it up it was cheap.. Not cheap now.. Thank God I don't have a rot problem, but I have put 1500 or more into the boat in less that a year..All my own work..It seems it never ends:eek:

So is it really cheap? Nope.. Could I replace it for 2500 or 3k? Maybe if I was lucky.

This 210 Horizon is a flat out awesome boat and a true score at the price even with the rot... Someone had put alot in it, to let it sit outside in the weather and rot with leaves on the deck.. Funny how people lose interest and let great things go to pot:confused:
It should be restored.. A great boat:cool: A great thread

Another long weekend on the boat.

Here is the tent over the boat.

Here we have the port side stringer bow end... real bad to work on but got all the rot out and just have to clean up the inside of the fiberglass shell.

Hi everyone, new to iboats and partner on this restoration
Lot's of grinding went on to get the hull this smooth, thank god for tyvek suits and respirators...
It is realy amazing to see how half-***ed the original fiberglass work is from the factory. Lots of voids and cloth not saturated with resin.
Well alot of the dirty work is done but still alot of work ahead.

Starboard side aft where we will be splicing the stringer in

2vj7o7a.jpg

Port side aft, this is another repair area.... We will be blocking in under the fiberglass to create a channel and drilling some 2" holes in the top to pour in Nida Bond ceramic transom compound. The tail of the stringer will go through the bulk and run back into that channel and attached in the pour.

Stringer and splice port side. The top of the stringer is notched so we can pour some Nida Bond to fill the tip of the stringer and bond it all together, the splice will run 6' total from the bulk to the other end of the stringer inside the ski locker. It will also serve to carry the deck where the cut was made to open the rot.

Notch in stringer to bond compound to stringer and fill in voids.

Here is a shot of the whole thing dry fit.

So I think we made some great progress this weekend.....lots of grinding and prep work, and more to come next time. Still have to make up some seat supports and fit them in. We hope to get the glassing started and Nida Bond poured next weekend then start glassing in the sole, stringers and bulks.

Looks like you are making great progress, especially considering you are in a "tent"!

The tent is working out nicely,we can open both ends and run a 36" fan to suck the dust out when grinding and close it up and run the heat for wood working and glassing.....it's so warm we have to work in a sweatshirt.

Can anyone tell me where I can locate a flanged grommet for the fuel lines that run through the bulkhead at the bilge.....just can't seem to find it online...

edit: After prolonged searching I found the Molded Rubber Motor Well Boot ! That's what it's called  LOL

Thanks Josh it sure is a labor of love! When she's done I see alot of fun on the water with friends and family so it's well worth the time spent....What else can you do in this weather anyway...sit in the house and stare at the 4 walls? Forget that! This is like therapy :)
