Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

I am doing the same thing to a Liberator by Four Winns. I believe they are the same hull. My transom, motor mounts and both engine stringers were bad. I am using a scarf joint to replace them One is comming from the cuddy and the other is starting just in front of the back bulkhead. I am making new mounts as well. After speaking with Four Winns I decided to put6 it back original. The glass work by Four Winns was not good on my boat. Also I believe that the transom leaked and the back sank. Rebuilding the 350 as well.

Here are a few more. My boat seemed to not have any woven roving, just mat. I plan to tab with mat and woven(two layers) and then cover with mat. The emgine mounts will be hard to cover I think.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

hi bud.... im at work waiting for some glass to flash off......then another 5 layers of 1708... its getting really cold outside right now.......so glassing is tough....check the glass temps every 5 mins....lol.

looks good so far......the only thing i would do.....is cut half the glass channel off....one side completely....by sliding the stringer in....its allmost impossible to get a good bond between the glass and the wood..(even with pouring it)...you can control one side.....but its tough to control bonding on both sides of the channel...
up front where you cant reach....you just have to do what you can do....

other than that...it looks great.....nice and clean....
make sure that all surfaces to be glassed are washed with acetone...(not just wiped) and especially the bottom of the channel where the stringer sits.

you have a ton of glassing to do......so one quick tip.....when you lay the glass for the stringers.....csm first....then the 1708....but when you lay the 1708....make sure the grain is going the same way as the stringer.....if you dont...the top edge of the glass will fray....and its a mess that can only be corrected with the grinder after the glass has cured..

ill be back on tommorow night....as im hoping to do some gellcoating tommorow.
(then finally the big regal's nasty bad stuff is done and i can work on the bottom hull punctures).

cheers
oops

oops What if I bond the stringer to the fiberglass channel first then pour the channel solid? Could that be an option?

between you stringer and the inner frame for the gass tank there should be a 1" space. It goes between the stringer and the inner board. It should be a long strip the length of the inner board for the tank. Without it nothing will line up right for the tank.

From your pic it looks like the floor supports over the tank are sitting on the tank. They should be sitting in slots accross the inner frame. This is why there is a space between the stringer and the frame for the tank. I am posting the picture of mine before I tore it out.

OOPS if you are still out there I was wondering with your huge knowledge of boat reconstruction. I have replaced one stringer and all new glass. Including the motor mount. I wonder if it is ok to do it the way rickryder is doing it. Can I us PL premium (rec. by four winns) to glue a new stringer in without tearing out the original glass? Gule it to the existing glass. Then glass behid it. Four Winns did not glass the back of the engine bed stringers. They just put it on heavy over the front. They said the used Woven Roving but I dont see any, maybe on the top of my motor mount. Also the glass for my motor mount is very solid but the wood it bad. The pic above of my earlier post is of the one I have replaced.
Sorry, not trying to highjack your post. I just figued this applied to us both.

Thanks GracieBell Yes I saw the supports for the fuel tank when we did the demo. There are a few things still to do to the stringers and bulks... Need to install drains from the ski locker and fuel tank area, drains between stringers, cut the hole for the fuel fill, vent and fuel line. Ski locker needs supports for the teak deck hatch, notch in and set the seat mounting.....a long list to do! :)

As far as the stringer position we ran string lines from the rear engine mount area to the original stringers so I know they are in the proper place. The distance between the stringers are 25 1/2 " W and my tank is 24" W bracket to bracket. I have 1" clearance bow to stern between bulks on the tank length measurement.

Well after more grinding and more cutting out and more grinding... we still have grinding and prep work left to do. Glad we are doing it ourselves, would hate to think what this would cost. Almost seems overwhelming but I guess it will get done eventually.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Hey Rick,
Is your bulkhead going to be bedded in something? I was not sure if they were floating like the sringers or bedded into something. It is a big job and my first one as well. Worked on it this weekend in my father in laws nice big heated shop (hope he does not kick me out). Going back to workon it tomorrow. It is about one hour from my home.
I am using mat and woven roving to put stringers back in. What are you going to use and are you going to encase them.Four Winns said they used mat and woven for the stringer and mounts. I noticed for the first time this weekend that my motor mounts actualy had woven roving in them. I could not find any in the stringers that I took out. I really looked too. I was going to tab with mat and woven then encase in just mat.
