Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

I have a question about the fuel tank area... Should that be glassed in with no drain to the bilge? I guess my line of thinking is that if I get a fuel leak I really don't want fuel leaking back into the engine compartment... Am I on the right track with that?

for whatever it's worth when I removed my fuel tank (35 Gal) there was no provision for drainage from tank area to the bilge.
The top at the bilge end was open where connections were made to the fuel intake and outlet and gauge.
there was about a 2" space from the tank too the bulkhead separating the tank and bilge area.
My bulkhead was 1/2 rotten so I'm replacing the whole thing with new plywood.

@ Wood

Well when I figured for the Nita Bond I thought I was going to need 5 gallons to pour some places....after laying out the stringers I found I only need about 2. I will have 3 gal of the Nida left .... I talked to Nida and asked if you can add milled fibers and cabosil to thicken it and use as bedding, answer was yes it would be fine....so instead of wasting it I'm making it into PB.

I'm putting drains everywhere so no water can be trapped and cause rot again. Never want to open the deck for repairs!

More progress today. Bedded the stringers in Nida Bond, cabasil and milled fiber mixture.
Spliced the port stringer to the existing 1/2 of fiberglass shell left from the stringer. Resin and csm between it and clamped.
Starboard stringer set with butt block splices, resin and csm again.
Set and bedded the ski locker bulk.
Fillet all the stringers and bulk.
Laid up the csm 8" tape on insides of ski locker and fuel tank area and let that kick.

We then mixed up another batch of Nida Butter and packed and fillet the outside of the stringers.
The Nida is dark grey so it was easy to see that the entire cavity under the stringers was full.
Then the csm tape on the stringers outsides laid in,csm covered the bulk and my seat base assembly.

Also set the channel port side aft ready to pour Nida Bond.

I'll have some pics up tomorrow night.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

The Nida Bond was great to work with,a bit stiff at first but gets more liquid when whipped up. It sure made some great filler when a small amount of cab and fibers mixed in. 2 qts of nida 3 oz of cabasil and 1/4 cup of fibers. It had the consistency of cake icing. Put it into a gallon ziploc bag,cut the tip and use it like a mortar bag to lay it in the gaps. Then a plastic spoon to fillet it smooth.

PG Your welcome dude....wish I would have caught the hose pic sooner....

So today we hope to get the bilge bulkhead set, Pour the Nida in the engine mount and starboard stringer tip, finish the splices and glass everything in 1708 biax. It's a tall order but we'll see!

I'll get some pics up tonight! :D

Lots of fun with fiberglass this weekend, really coming along. Stringers set, bulkheads set, motor mount area poured with Nitabond. One more week and the floor should be ready to go in. Rick will post some pics later.

Was a great weekend and progressing well. The 1708 is a dream to lay up,and the Nida Butter fillet worked out very well. The glass laid down so well....no air bubbles/voids.

So another 16 hours on the rebuild.....maybe we can get some time after work one night and get a bit more glass laid down.....Can't wait for the deck to be on.....tired of tripping around stringers!

My buddy Rob has never worked with glass and resin before, and I have only done a little years ago.
I owe all the guys who helped me understand what to do and it made the job easy! Thanks guys for all the help so far!!
