87 IO OMC 4.3liter

When i hook up the water hose to lower unit there is no water comeing out of my exhaust, water is coming out the front & the covers on my 87 IO OMC, shoulnt all water come out the exhaust??

That's normal. There is an opening at the bottom of the transom assembly where exhaust exits at idle. These are the exhaust idle relief ports. When you are in the water, there is too much back pressure for all the exhaust to exit at the prop at idle and the engine wouldn't idle well becuase of it. That is why they are there. When you are moving, the exhaust exits the prop.

There may be a little water coming out there. There is a small hose that comes off of the water pump. Take the cover off and have a look. May be the water pump cover is cracked or leaking.

Water shouldn't come out of there. Bruce is right; the hose is off or the housing is cracked. Pull the cover and look.

looks like the water pump cover might need resealed.

there is a hole below pump in the unit, could hose go there?
maual says hose hooks to port side of pump cover, but i cant find a place to hook one up..

any help?
pics of what it should look like?

manual calls it drain hose & vent hose???

pulled impeller dont look right 2 me...

the housing has little hole in it on the port side where the hose would hook up but nose barb or place where one has been...

Found out why mine doesnt have hose motor& drive is a 86'.
Print dont show a hose on the 86' but does on the 87'.

But should the 86' housing i show in the pic supose to have hole in it?

The impeller looks decent except for the one wiper vane that is folded over backwards. the little hole allows air purge for quick priming.

New to sterndrives. I got an 87 OMC Cobra with a 4.3L It has 250Hrs. I was running it with the muffs and noticed some water coming out of the Wate Pump access cover. Is this normal or do I need a new pump.

I have the same setup I just changed the impeller and that is a pee hole in the housing. I did have a bad impeller and when I changed the gasket and oring it did not leak anywhere but from the pee hole. It does show it in the manual I started mine on muffs with the cover off and it shoots water out of the pee hole about 20ft. nothing hooks up to it it is right....

The 87 models and later should have a small hose hooked to the water pump cover.The hose goes down the water cavity in the drive.
It is just a drain hose and doubt it is an issue when the drive is in the water.All of that is below the waterline anyway.

im gona change impeller & keep old housing...

gona change exhaust bellow while im @ it, found little tear in it..

Just get the transom service kit and do the drive bellow too...If one is cracking then the others are not far behind.
Also the wear plate and the metal part of the impeller housing is best if it shows any signs of grooves or wear.

I have an 86 setup OMC Cobra and mine has a pin hole that squirts too. No hose to it, it runs at proper temp no problems all summer.
