I know it has been a while since my last post. The powerhead is completely rebuilt and ready to go back on the lower unit. So far the only question we have so far is:
The shifter rod coming up from the lower unit, we are having a hard time getting it connected. The OEM Manual does not describe this very well. Can someone please post instructions for reinstalling the powerhead to the lower unit? Is there anything else we should be careful of? The model is J70TLCUR. Thanks as always in advance for your help.

Re: '87 Johnson 70 Assemby Question

This whole section is a little difficult to follow in my intertec manual.
Screw in shift rod until seated. Then back off until off set at top is located on port side of gearcase so it will mate with shift rod arm. With shift in neutral measure from gearcase mating surface to the center of hole in upper shift rod.21 23/32 on long shaft 78-89 60,70,75 hp.16 13/32 on standard 75 hp.only other standard demension mentioned is 16 11/32 on 74/75 models.

Re: '87 Johnson 70 Assemby Question

David....push the shift rod down as far as it will go....this puts the lower unit in reverse. As the powerhead is dropped onto the midsection, push the shift lever forward....this is to clear the shift rod.

Once the powerhead is attached and torqued, push the shift lever to port to open the shift lever pin and rotate the shift lever towards the rear until the shift lever pin aligns with the hole in the shift rod. Then pull the shift lever to starboard and insert the retaining pin.
