'87 Johnson 70 Taper Pin Removal Tool

Got the motor almost completely torn down. Trying to remove the intake manifold. The manual says to make a tool for removing the taper pin. It says "Do not any tool smaller than the taper pin bore to remove the pin"?????? This does not make any sense to me. It has to be smaller for it to fit in the hole. Please help.

I always used a punch about the same diameter.Knock the pins out before removing the bolts.Be sure to center it right and give it a solid strike,you dont need to hit like slege hammer.Sometimes manuals can over com[licate things.They dont want you to mushroom the end or it wont go through without then grinding the mushed end down

I assume you are saying that you can't get at the pin to drive it out with a punch, thus the need to make something. I've never seen that situation, though some of them sure are at an angle of attack. In that case, use a brass drift so you don't mess up the end of the pin and go ahead and drive it at whatever angle is necessary.

Whatever, isn't the small end of the pin sticking out? If it is, you only have to move it a small distance to loosen it in the tapered bore. You shouldn't have to follow it all the way out with the driver tool. Of course if the small end isn't sticking out and you can't get a straight shot at it, well you might have to make something as suggested.

If you have the correct service manual for your engine, it will have a diagram of the tool you need to make. Some of those pin's require an off-set punch, you just can't get at them with a straight punch.

We can get at it. This the last part to come off before we take the block to the machine shop. I just wanted to make sure we could use a punch. My Dad is the one wielding the hammer. I am the bull in the china cabinet. Thanks again.

You are correct. However, Dad is 70 miles away. When I was a kid, I was his tool monkey. He retired 5 years ago. I was moved back to Houston and took over his territory for Agfa NDT. The last 4 or 5 film processors I installed, he was my tool monkey. He loved it. When I burned this motor, he said to bring it to him. As long as I don't try to rush him. He can take as long as he wants. I travel out to see him at least 2-3 times a month as work allows. Those 2-3 times a month are just like old times. I am sure he loves them as much as I do. I wish he were closer. When this is over, I am going to store the boat close to him and give him a set keys. The best part, he doesn't know it yet. My son (14) and I (44) will enjoy the trip out to the water with PawPaw. BTW Dad is David Jr., I am the 3rd and my son the 4th.
