Engine Info: 1987 165hp inline-4 cylinder Mercruiser, MCM165

Okay, I have just replaced the front cover on my engine. New seals; however, the main oil seal (around the crankshaft) does not seem to seal anything. I can almost put my finger through the hole from the front of the engine into the timing chain area. Same front cover that was on there before...same seal...what am I missing? The only thing that I have left to mount on the front of the crankshaft is the stator/rotor assembly. But this would let oil leak out.........please help!!!!

Does the Harmonic Balancer not fit through the crank seal and seal against the seal?

I migh be wrong.

Yep, I'm probably wrong.

Just noticed you have the 4 cylinder 165.
I though it was the 6 cylinder.

Generally the seals seat/run on the crank pulley/balancer.
