Hey Guys,
Let me start off by saying that this is not my motor... this motor is on my buddies boat and I'm trying to help him get things fixed because we all know how scary that first repair is.

He was out the other day running his boat at full throttle when the motor started backing off by itself and eventually died. After this, he was unable to get the motor started again and had to be towed back to the ramp.

Water pump is working
Motor is turning over, it just won't catch
Starter sometimes does not disengage from flywheel. I'm not sure if he ran like this, but we noticed that it would stay engaged every couple tries while we were messing around with it tonight.

We have not changed the fuel filter yet, but its on the list.

We tried to check for a spark by taking a spark plug out of the cylinder and attaching it to the plug wire. He would crank the motor quickly while I looked for a spark. We checked all 3 wires and saw nothing. On the last try, I happened to be holding the spark plug wire at the bend (where it attaches to the plug) and the plug sparked and I got a nice shock. This is really confusing to me... anybody have some insight on this?

Fuel and oil pump is supposedly rebuilt and the carbs have just been cleaned.

A mechanic he talked to suggested that it might have something to do with the stator... is there a way to figure that out? He is planning on working on the motor again Tuesday morning, so any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks in Advance!

I know it's an '87, and I've deduced that it's a 3 cylinder, I think.. That still could make it anything from 50 hp to 90...so, what engine are we looking at?

See "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs Forum.
