Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

The closer I get to being done, the more of a wreck I am becoming. wondering if it will hold, do I have enough glass, oh well too late now if I don't.
I need a little input. I glassed the stringers with 2 layers of 10 o.z cloth. this was after 3 layers of being sealed with epoxy resin. This is my main concern that I can't seem to get over. Do you guys think I should have used more. I am terrible at second guessing things. I think that is why I am really getting some serious gray hair. :)

Was going to take today off of work and finish the glass work as much as possible, but the weather is rainy and cool, was supposed to be warmer, maybe it will get there later today. ultimate goal is July 21st for splashdown, may not be complete but seaworthy. July 4th will be two years and the week of July 23rd-30th will be vacation at the lake.

Hey Tink,

Don't worry about a thing. Your boat will be stronger than new. Considering you used epoxy, 20 oz of glass for the stringers and deck and 40 oz on transom is more than enough. Just remember what you ripped out when you started. My stringers were only glassed on one side and my transom didn't even have 20 oz of glass -- and that was all with poly resin.

Please PM me when you get the chance. I want to know more about your alignment tool.

See ya,

SD

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Making headway, almost finished with the bow seats, got the rear seats adhered in,(used epoxy mix to adhere them to the deck.) still need to tab with fiberglass. filled the areas below the consoles with foam.

Looking at a finish date of the 21st or sooner. I am taking time off of work as the weather just gets too humid or too cool for me to feel comfortable to glass. Working in the mornings and taking afternoons off until this part is done. The rest can be done in the evenings.

I'm working on the alignment, (being a perfectionist is giving me grey hairs) the tool I believe may be cut a little small. Its close but need to buy a caliper or micrometer to be sure. I do have good lines around the tool in the grease, but need to get the bilgekote finished dso I can finish wiring to roll the engine over for 90,180,270,360 testings. (don't want to try and take the flywheel cover off to rotate it by hand.

up to date....

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

After getting my caliper I found out that the aligment tool had been machined to specs. This being a good thing obviously, now to the news:

Nearly completed with the glasswork. Today spent all day doing the mechanical stuff. Installed the power steering, wiring, etc. and was able to check all the electrical out and roll the engine over for the first time in 21 years. I had added some oil into the cylinders a while back. Things were going well until I decided to work on alignment. first position the tool slid in/out with great ease. 90 degrees seemed way out of wack and couldn't get it to align. I am beginning to wonder if the coupler is on the engine crooked, the engine rear mounts need replaced (which I didn't do) or something else. The first thing I might do is loosen the rear bolts and shake the engine and see if it settles. If this doesn't work I may have to pull the engine and check things over and possibly install new rear mounts.

Looks a little bleak at this point, but have a week of working on it as I would like to splash sometime the week of the 25th.

Nearest Mercruiser dealer is 75 miles on way. I hope I don't have to take it, but if I must.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!! after another 5 hours of aligning, installing, removing, aligning, installing, head scratching, wasp swatting, aligning, etc. etc.....the outdrive is aligned, installed and ready for a run. Trouble is....I can't find my muffs
However, a great feeling knowing that mechanically I could go boating. :D
I will go pick up some more muffs tomorrow.

Just need to finish the interior a bit.

Many hours behind, just a few more to go.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

was able to fire it up tonight, at 9:21 CDT it took of on its own fuel source. I did run into a bit of an issue, when I was running it (had been running for nearly 45 mins at no load, I noticed at the very end it was getting a little warmer than usual. I noticed that my hose keeping the tank full (dumb idea to use a tank) had come out and the tops of the inlet holes were exposed, lost the prime and think I lost the impeller. no damage to engine as it didn't get that hot, letting it cool down naturally and will pick up another impeller kit.

Ran ok, needs some carb work, need to check timing and dwell. Will be glassing the next few evenings to get ready for this weekend.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Got the kit ordered, is being sent second day from Iboats. Should be here tomorrow. Worked until midnight last night fabricating/sealing items. I think I'm about done with the fab work (knock on wood) I have some more tabbing and such. I got up at 4:00 am CDT and starting in again. Both the back to back seats are in, passenger back to back is tabbed in and nearly complete. drivers back to back is in and sealed, need to tab it in this afternoon. couple more times at the glasswork and I should be finished with that part.

soon I will be prepping for priming and painting with bilgekote. I will be doing this with my spray gun to speed up the process of coverage.

Its Sunday evening and we're at the lake. Boat is carpeted (mostly) and have a few cushions to clean and install. looking forward to splashing tomorrow. week vacation at the lake and wanted to use it. It's not cleaned up, but should be water ready tomorrow.

I did ruin the impeller. new one is installed.
I have my sister here to help upload a video of the launch so you can see the success or the demise.

At 8:40 pm on Monday, July 25th, we successfully splashed. I am not done with the boat, but done enough to run. Lights aren't working so we didn't go for a night ride. Working on a video.

You are doing a great job on that ol' Seville - Looks better than when it was new and probably is. Keep up the good work.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Returned home from our weeks' vacation. I wish I could say I am overjoyed about my rebuild, but it's difficult when I see and hear things that shouldn't be happening:facepalm:.

When I turn the wheel all the way left or right, it sounds like the u-joint knuckle is hitting the other knuckle. Almost like I need to limit the throw of the steering somehow.

The gap in the windshield is spreading, which I am sure has something to do with the spread of the hull as I had to cut relief cuts to get the cap back on. I had to pull pretty good to get the cap back on.

We did have a good time this weekend, but looking back there are a LOT of things that I would have done different to make this boat better.

Carpet wasn't completed as I need to carpet around the seats. Need to bilgekote the tops of the seat mounts.

I didn't get the whole deck bilgkoted as I planned, carpeted the thing and went to the lake.

In fact worked on it until 7:30 pm on Monday just to get it in the water.

Nonetheless I was glad to have her afloat again. Just hope that she holds together, otherwise it's grinding time again.

I need to pick up a different cable for my camera to upload some videos.

Thank you for your support

Congrats Tink!!! Looks great!

I have a few minor things to fix with mine also. However, I am just going to use the heck out of it the rest of the summer and worry about the little things in the winter.

TWO,

Looks great sitting in the water! Getting to actually use the boat can take the edge off those last few details.

Congrats!

I agree, and think it looks fantastic Tinker! My interior is shot, and I'd be a happy camper to have one in as good of condition as yours is. Don't sweat the small stuff, just know that you have done the best you can and enjoy it. You deserve it.
