Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

Got a little boat therapy in today, its been too long. 5 hrs of stripping and I'm still not done, some of that paint on the side is impervious to that nasty stripper.

This has got to be one of the worst parts of the rebuild. Hope to finish the stripping tomorrow.

I with ya there, paint stripping is the worst but it is rewarding when finished and the restore can go forward.

Not sure if these are bad and poorly thought out scribe lines, or if these are cracks. If they are cracks, they are in a strange place, and the only reason I could think they would be there is if they had really bad burrs on the drilled holes for the rivets.

Anyone see anything like this before?

I think those are scribe lines to line up with the ribs. Cracks aren't that straight and are ragged.

You got her clean!

Looking real good Astor, I agree stripping paint is not a lot of fun. I'm with GA those are factory scribe lines, they were not real careful.

thanks for the feedback on the scribe lines guys, sure is making me feel a little better having a bit of a consensus, but would be nice if some else had seen this before, you can imagine all the thoughts going through my mind about cracks at every rib.

I actually had a vision of me cutting the hull to pieces with a plasma torch.:upset:

I can take a picture of the scribe line that goes top to bottom on the center of the outside of my transom, it looks real bad in the polished aluminum.

You're lucky they're straight. It seems some of the SC assemblers weren't real prideful. I love the rivet heads laid on top of rivet heads.

Oh I've got one of them double rivets on this boat and I have a rivet in the middle of nowhere doing absolutely nothing, also sighting down the boat bow to stern the rib rivets are not very straight. This must have been a job done by hand with no jigs or fixtures, either that, or they allowed drinking in their factory.

Or it was built Friday after lunch. No jigs, flasks and looking for the weekend. That covers Monday through Friday, wonder if they worked Sat and Sun? My 21 years older is the same way, so it was part of doing business, I guess.

Yeah my Chief has some of those scribe lines too. Hey use an awl rather than a pencil... makes sense?

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

I'm pretty sure those scribe marks are scribe marks, if that makes sense, but I do have two scribe marks that became what I believe are cracks. Scribe marking aluminum is bad news, aluminum is prone to fatigue cracking and has no fatigue limit like steel. So putting a scribe mark between rivet holes is just giving it a crack initiation site if there is any stress in the material.

So I will be polishing out the scribe marks, drill the crack ends of the two cracks, and patching it.

Oh man, that's not good at all. The cracks followed the scribes right out. Never have I witnessed that before. Where exactly are those cracks at? Normally rib ends have all the stress cracks.

That sure did follow the scribe lines. It can't be that coincidental.

They are not at the rib ends, but those two cracks are near where the trailer rollers contacted the hull, outboard of the strakes.

The scribe lines are at each row of rib rivets across where the strake is riveted on. They extend a bit past the first rivet on each side of the strakes.

crud :(

my scribe marks are internal and go bow/stern rather than port/starboard..my stress cracks all travel bow/stern...coincidence? :noidea:

Re: 87 SS180 First Rebuild

worst part is i did the rebuild wrong, I leak tested the hull, so figured no bad rivets no cracks, so thought putting the foam and floor in would be easier over the winter, then flip the hull when it warms up to strip outdoors, then paint . Now I wish I had flipped it when it was stripped bare. Oh well closed end rivets and 5200 on deck next.

:frusty:

Murphy is running rampant through the mob right now!

If I can't get a twist out of my laminated transom, he paid me a visit this weekend as well
