I have this motor on a 18 ft skeeter, had the carbs gone through, replaced some electrical coils?, new impeller. JUst got it back from the shop, no water out of the pee hole and the motor runs like she is missing or fouling the plugs? Can't seem to get everything working right at the same time. How realiable and well built is this motor? Anything I should know about keeping her in tune or that is mercury specific? thanks for any input...

The motor is well built and reliable, but like anything mechanical, it can be abused, or a dopey mechanic can fuddle things up.

Time to take it back to the shop who supposedly fixed and let them finish the job. They should have done a test run before giving it back to you.

**** me off when the mechanic says "my old boat" cost more to keep up than payments on a new boat! I like the boat I guess I just need to get a manual and learn all the stuff about this motor and ditch the smart *** boat shop!

Wouldn't be the first time I heard of the sabotage to sale routine.
If I heard a comment like that, I'd show taillights like now.

Re: 88' 150hp Black Max questions?

I have had an 86 150hp black max for the 3rd year now. From the start it has had a spitting condition at idle. Last year a great mechanic installed new stator and completely tuned. I have rebuilt carbs twice, water pump twice, fuel pump twice, poppit valve, replaced plugs and fuel lines. Still have an overheat problem when going any faster than idle, it will idle all day without overheating. Motor bogs down and dies when going to WOT unless you keep choking and will take off (not good). I know the consensus says they are great motors, but I'm not so sure.

They have to have fuel. If you put a pressure gauge on your fuel rail, on a hose in your lap so you can see it, you'll not that the pressure goes to 0 when it craps out.

It could be anything from junk in the screen, plugged fuel filter, fuel pump, atwood plastic bayonet fitting. (That's right, won't flow enough fuel)

Mine had some trouble like that. Got it right and now when I can it, all hell breaks loose behind the boat, and when the high five gets a bite, she's gone so quick the bow never covers the horizon.

If you mess around and try to run it like that, you'll burn it down and then it'll really be the junk you think it is.

hope it helps
