Re: 88' 150hp Black Max questions?
I have had an 86 150hp black max for the 3rd year now. From the start it has had a spitting condition at idle. Last year a great mechanic installed new stator and completely tuned. I have rebuilt carbs twice, water pump twice, fuel pump twice, poppit valve, replaced plugs and fuel lines. Still have an overheat problem when going any faster than idle, it will idle all day without overheating. Motor bogs down and dies when going to WOT unless you keep choking and will take off (not good). I know the consensus says they are great motors, but I'm not so sure.
They have to have fuel. If you put a pressure gauge on your fuel rail, on a hose in your lap so you can see it, you'll not that the pressure goes to 0 when it craps out.
It could be anything from junk in the screen, plugged fuel filter, fuel pump, atwood plastic bayonet fitting. (That's right, won't flow enough fuel)
Mine had some trouble like that. Got it right and now when I can it, all hell breaks loose behind the boat, and when the high five gets a bite, she's gone so quick the bow never covers the horizon.
If you mess around and try to run it like that, you'll burn it down and then it'll really be the junk you think it is.
hope it helps
