My secondary throttle pickup screw is not positioned correctly to slide along the backside of the pickup arm like it should. It drives itself into the end of the arm instead. Any suggestions?

I looked at my 40hp and the pickup screw is turned all way back. There is no gap like in your photo.. Have you tried adjusting it?

I didn't try backing it all the way off, I will give it a try... Back in a minute.
Nope, the screw still hits the pickup arm in exactly the same spot, just later in the throttle rotation.

Get a Factory Service Manual and go through the Timing Link and Sync sections. Twisting screws to see what happens will always result in a Need for the manual

I have the seloc 1404 manual, where I got the photo of how it's supposed to look when correct. I would love to have one, but don't. The written directions in the seloc is rediculous.
1. Motor off.
2. Push spark adv arm to it's Stop.
3.DO NOT actuate throttle lever.
4. Adj screw until contact with P/U arm occurs.
5. Done.

This procedure is great for pinpointing the exact TIME when the screw begins to advance the throttle past half-to-full. But my problem seems to be a mis-alignment somewhere, like the carb needs loosened and jacked to the right, or maybe the brace that the throttle cam pivots on is bent. Both the pickup arm and the throttle cam/screw that engages it are pivotted on immovable (presumably) structures. It would seem I need to shorten the distance between those two pivot points so the screw changes it's angle of attack.

Well I got tired of messing with it and I took the carburetor off. I drilled out the mounting holes eighth of an inch bigger and I slid the carburetor over and now everything is hunky-dory!
