Hello, Im working on my father-in-laws
1988 48HP Evinrude. He was complaining about it will not idle and is hard to start. So I remove the cover and the first think I notice is the black roller on the throttle linkage is not touching the timing advance, easy fix. So I hook up the (lake on a hose)
and start it up to check the idle, as soon as its running I hear this clanging noise
and shut it down. The noise sounds like the starter bindix is hitting the ringear. I checked the starter and no problem. So started it again and start looking for the source of the noise and where the timing advance stop is, I can push up on this and the noise stops. I'm going to pull the flywheel this afternoon. Does the timing advance plate have a bushing/bearing that could be worn? Does anyone have a suggestion on what to look for?

PS--I called my father in law, he said he never heard the noise, but he wears two hearing aids.
