Hello guys,
My '88 50hp has been running great last fall and this spring thanks to this Iboats forum. I have had it out about 5 times in the past 6 weeks or so. In that time she started great and had no problems and like i said, was running better than ever before. So....I anchored up to fish a little, long story short, when I was idling out of my fishing spot, my anchor line fouled my prop and stalled the engine . After clearing the line and making sure the prop wasn't bent, I made sure it spun in neutral (and caught in F/R). Next the engine started fine to my relief. I motored down river to another fishing spot.
When I got to my next spot, I ended up helping out a fishing boat. This 40' chesapeake crabbing boat needed a tow. I towed them for about thirty minutes at idle speed. she shuddered a little at the end of the tow and i had to increase throttle to maintain previous rpms.
Both incidents occurred within an hour. After my initial start (post anchor line), the engine was increasingly hard to get into gear without stalling. It was increasingly difficult to start after the tow.
Now, it will start and stall intermittently on fast idle. It stalls going into gear. Sometimes I eventually got her to go by running a high idle and then punching her into gear without stalling.
I am not sure which event affected the engine or if it was a combination. Tonight I tried cleaning the carb and still have the same starting problem. It basically wont run for more than a second or two. Apologies for the long post I only wanted to give you as much information as I could. Maybe someone has had a similar experience. MY engine is 1988 50hp 15' boat towing a 40' er. and I ran over my own anchor line. What a day... thanks Chris
