OK so i think my charging system is starting to act up. To start how much voltage should the battery receiving during charging? If i do have an issue it is most likely a rectifier or more likely a regulator problem right? BTW its a 1988 60hp. Thanks if you guys can help at all.

As far as I can see your engine only has the round non regulated rectifier. That means that the volts will rise once the battery is charged and the engine is at highish revs probably to 16 volts possibly higher.

You need around 14 volts though to charge the battery.

If you think you are not charging it is easy to test those non regulated rectifiers.

btw how do i determine if the rectifier is bad, if the results are not the same between the yellows and the case and the yellows and the red? and there is only 3 wires correct?

You measure between the red and a yellow. You then swap the meter leads and measure again. One way you should get infinity but the other way you should get a low reading. If you don't get this difference the rectifier is bad. You move on to measure between the red and the other yellow. You should like wise get an infinite reading one way and a low reading the other way.

Then repeat between the case and each of the yellows. Each time you should get infinity one way and a low reading the other way. If you don't get those two readings anywhere the rectifier is bad.

All the low readings should be similar if they are not then something is wrong with it.

Each pair of readings is testing one of the four diodes. They all must conduct one way, giving the low reading, but not the other way.

Most likely if any of the diodes are bad you will get infinity both ways.

Heck its 02:40 in the morning here and I'm explaining how to test rectifiers. I'm off to bed!

I'm an OEM guy but none of them are bad. Shop price and availability. iboats shipping is fast and sure.
