88 bayliner 21' cuddy cabin 5.7 omc outdrive.......finally got drive off and was able to pull engine out of boat to acess what the condition of motor.....motor is junk 100% about the only thing i can salvage are the intake and carb, block and all pistons, cam and lifters are all junk. so here is my question I have a 350 engine out of a truck that i had, older small block, not one piece rear main seal, 4 bolt mains, 4bbl carb.......is this engine a good candidate for this boat, i know i will have to rebuild it, but should i use this engine or look for another engine that is the newer one piece rear main seal type (this is not a vortec) smallblock.. if i run the casting #s it says that my engine is a 69-79 truck 4-bolt main.

thanks any input will be appriciated

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... I don't believe you can get a coupler to connect the drive to the older crank pattern,...

but I may be wrong,...

Re: 88 bayliner 5.7 engine choices

Bondo, been researching this coupling issue and found a lot of conflicting info on this. Ifound a sierra marine 18-21751 coupling that says it is for the 2 piece rear main seal engine, also while researching more i found older posts in I BOATS about this coupler and on several different post you (bondo) say it will work, so i am a little confused when you say there is no coupler made for this engine.

the engine i have is as follows casting # on block 3970010 decodes to a 69-79 truck 2 or 4 bolt main (i have 4 bolt main)
i would really like to use this enine because i already have it and i like the 4 bolt mains. but if a coupler isn't available it doesn't do me any good.

if anybody has done this swap could you post what issues you had with this swap

thanks again scott

Not sure about the OMC.......But Merc does make a coupler for this aplication. 2-pc too 1-pc rear main.

Do some digging and you may have to talk to someone.

Re: 88 bayliner 5.7 engine choices

I may have been in on those posts.
If I remember my research, a coupler was made to use a 2pc crank with a Cobra drive.

Could have been since '86 was the first year for both the Cobra, and the 1 piece RMS, either OMC or GM had some leftover 2 piece RMS engines to use. Or OMC made the option available for those who were re-powering the boat after an engine failure, and had a 2 piece block for the job.

Regardless of the reason, don't think anybody here has had one in their hands. Perhaps you can order one from here on an educated guess, and if it doesn't look right, return it. Your local friendly NAPA dude may also be willing to order one for you (Sierra brand) to take a peak at.

fianally mking progress on the bayliner. did find a drive coupling (part #18-21751)to run the old style 2 piece rear main seal small block chevy from WULFFE marine ( they were awesome, called and parts guy took part off shelf and measured the bolt circle to make sure it was correct after several other places would not bother). engine is all built and set in boat, now to figure out what po did to the wiring. motor in boat.jpg thanks for all the help and advice

the 3.0L didn't go 1 pc rear main until 1990 so there's no problem getting a Cobra coupler - just order from a 1986-1989 3.0 and it will fit any 2 pc rear main chevy from a 2.5L to a 454
