When im at home and start my boat it will start no problem at normal idle nice and smooth, when i take it to the lake it will start but dies on me everytime. i have to turn the idle screw pretty high just to keep it running what can i do to fix this. my rpm gauge isnt working but i do know its way to high and its not normal. what rpm is suitable for idle in water. any help would be appricated.

Ive had the carbs rebuilt they even boiled the carbs. i think i do have a small fuel leak somewhere i see fuel sitting on top of bottom carb probably coming from middle carb but not a whole lot i didnt think it wold affect the idle so is a leak my main affect on smooth idle the vro pump works i have a clear fuel filter so i can see fuel going through i also go through 15 gallons of gas in about 5 hours is that normal.

The idle for that engine must be set when the boat is floating normally in the water. The engine must be in forward gear. Set the idle between 650 and 750 rpm. You can't set the idle when it is on the trailer. It must be set when the prop is way under water, creating normal backpressure.

ok lets say i do that and when i take it out of the water and hook it up to a hose at home will the rpms still be at 0 70 rpms or will it idle higher without the back pressure.

My engine idles about 1200-1300 rpm when on the trailer with no backpressure. Every boat/engine combination will be infinitely different. Depends on how deep the engine sits in the water and the pitch of the prop you have on the engine.

I have a 15 gallon tank is it normal to go through a full tank in 5 hrs and 2 hours of it was engine off swimming and fishing. So basicly 3 hrs of full throttle boating gas empty.

Sound normal. These crossflows were never known to be a fuel-efficient engine. Keep in mind that your XP 150 comes from the factory with big-throated 175 carbs. It puts out 10% more hp than the decal on the side of the cowling. Their best fuel economy (cruise) is when you pull the throttle back from max rpm-to about 3/4 throttle. That's when the carb butterflys close slightly, but the timer base is still at max timing.
