Hi,

I have a 15HP 1988 Evinrude 2-stroke (E15RCCS) with the late type 1 carburetor model (plastic bowl and carb cover). Attached is a schematic of the exact carburetor.

Problem: Choke lever arm (19) does not adjust choke plate when it is seated in the plastic primer stick. When I removed the carb I noticed the lever arm is not under tension at all and I believe it should be. The choke return spring (10) must've came loose. The evinced/johnson repair manual does not address this issue or provide adequate pictures regarding this carburetor model. Both strings are still in place but have come undone. The schematic attached does not indicate where the springs (return and override[14]) are attached in the final assembly.

Does anyone know where the springs are attached? Can you provide a picture or video detailing the linkage mechanism between lever choke, springs, and choke plate?

Much appreciated

Choke rod goes in the orientation shown; tab #19 in your diagram sticks up vertically through the slot in the rod. I think the springs will be self loading hooked up as indicated in the diagram.

Thanks for the post. I am still a bit confused.

What do you mean self loaded? My diagram doesn’t show where the hook ends of each spring attach to. One end of each spring has a hook while the other is straight. However, they are wound oppositely to each other (note hook end vs straight end).

As a result, I figured they were loaded and then attached to something on choke lever (19) or the arm that they are seated on?

My 84 9.9 has the metal bowl and cover but I will try and post a pic in the morning and hope OMC didn't change it up to much.

Springs operate in opposing directions, hook ends on #19 and straight end catching on shaft -- as I recall.

UPDATE

1. So I was not frugal in my approach to reattaching the carb override spring. I snapped the hook end off so it is not seated on #24 (the "sleeve" - not sure what the rod is called that mounts the actual plate. Nothing is listed in schematic)
2. The choke return spring is seated in place and the choke lever arm (#19) returns to resting position.

I have a new override spring on order and should have it in the upcoming weeks. Had to order from the U.S. as none was found locally in Canada. $24.94 after shipping :|

I've made a google folder so people who see this post can have a look at the exact issue I am having.

There is something going on with the choke override spring I think. I reattached the carb to the motor and checked to see if the choke knob (#15) would full close the butterfly plate. It did not. I am hoping to find out where anyone can confirm this?

I used a side angle in the video to show that the choke lever (19) tongue rotates to a point where it is parallel to the carb surface. This means that it would not be seated in the choke knob (15) as the tongue would slip out of the knob housing.

Any suggestions and can anyone confirm that the butterfly plate on the air intake barrel is closing adequately?
