Hello everyone,

First of all Im new here and also to boats in general but i have excellent auto mechanic skills. I just havent worked on boat motors yet so any help is definitely appreciated here. I realize i am in for a long long journey of learning about these outboards but im excited and willing to learn.

I need to install a shift cable because the old one was bent for some weird reason. I havent started it yet but it does run as i tested it before i bought it. Ive been working on some things since i brought it home and am not ready to fire it up. But I would like to get this shift cable issue fixed because i am putting the interior panels back together at this point and have also purchased a new controller as the original Marine one was toast. I tried taking it all apart and regreasing it and there were some parts that were broken inside so i just bought a new one. Its just an older SL3 side mount that i found for cheap. Its compatible with my cables so thats not an issue. Ive got that worked out. Its hooking up the cable to the engine that im not sure about.

I believe in the manual it says that Forward gear is achieved by moving the shift arm towards the REAR of the powerhead???

If its necessary to know, it has a side mount basic control. R-N-F without any extra bells and whistles. And according to the directions I can set it up to pull or push for forward gear. But I prefer to push in forward like i assume most boats are. So thats how this one is set up.

Anyways, am i hooking this up correctly by doing what the manual says and pushing the shift arm(at the engine) towards back of boat before attaching the spring loaded nut onto the stud at the engine? Of course I will have the controls at the helm in forward as well.
