Hi, I just went out in the boat to for a quick spin to get the bilge to empty the boat and the trim is not working. The motor runs but no movement. I was wondering, am I out of fluid or do i need to check out the pump for rebuild? This is new to me and I see just a bit of oil res in the water. If so what oil do I put in and what is the procedure? Thanks

On the side of the pump is a screw in cover.Be real carefull when unscrewing and installing it.
I use an oil can someone suggested a squeeze ketchup bottle.
Open it and if the screw has red oil it's trim/tilt fluid.
Brown is 20 or 30 wt oil.
Fill it till it runs out and reseal and cycle the pump.
Then top off again.View attachment oilcan.bmp

Thanks jerryjerry05. I went out to the water to check this out and there is a knurl headed bolt on the side. I took it off and and checked the fluid. I stuck a piece of white paper inside and it was lite in color. The trim is stuck all the way up and about an inch and a half or less of fluid in the pump. How do I get it to go down? Thanks

If it's white??? It has water in the oil and you have more trouble.
uNdo the froont two lines.Be careful when you undo them.

It's is a light in colour like new motor oil, sorry for my spelling and smells like motor oil. Looks like original what little I can get, I think the O ring needs to be replaced in the bolt. I was talking to a retired marina mechanic today and he said it won't make any difference to use dex III or up to fill up. If it's calm tomorrow I will tackle.

I went out and topped up the fluid in the trim this morning and no change. Sounds like the motor shaft dislodged from the pump. Makes a loud rattling sound. Any idea how to repair without buying a new one?

I got the motor to come down from three quarters up, took us while. Now it's stuck at the trim cylinder, can't get it to budge.

Don't mix oils.
If it has 20wt use 20wt.
I understand mixing the oils casn cause the o-rings to go???
If you undo the front two lines it should come down.Maybe undo the third??

RRitt repairs them.If it's fixable?? He's way cheaper than a new one.
He's on this site contact him.

Ya thanks, I might have to do that. I have a retired marina mechanic dropping by this weekend to check it out after fishing on the lake. He seems to think I have an air lock in the pump. Too late, I couldn't find 20wt oil up here so used Dex atf. He said it was the same wt as the 20wt.

Finally found a 3/8 wrench to take off the lines to drop the o/b motor. Found the pump was not pumping at all and took off the motor and found this.

Any ideas for a quick fix till I order a new one. This a bad design or is the washer up at the bushes wore out. Found a slotted screw driver that fit and worked the trim up and down by hand. Thanks for any input.

After four hours of filing and grinding I got the motor seated in the pump. I wanted to use a proper heat washer up at the top end at the brushes but couldn't find one in the shed. So I had a lot more grinding to do. Gotta do with what I have up here at the cottage here.
Hand filed the bottom of the motor shaft to grip 1/8 (soft metal). Ground down motor casing 1/8. Still not enough but back to original. Should last the rest of the season till I get back home to order new one. lol

looks good. have a battery handy. after you assemble motor but before you tighten cover bolts tap the battery to check free spin. repeat after 1/2 tighten and agian near finish. If you overtighten then you usually damage top bearing or crack cover.

There is almost no end play on armature. put motor in vise upside down after assembly. drop from sealing face of reservoir to tip of armature is 1/4" +- 1/16. grab armature and gently pull then push. If travel is 1/8" or more then you need to open it up and reshim.

mouynt valve body before putting pump on engine. rounded armature tips and stripped ports are common among people who try to leave tubes and pumps on engine while they remove/install just the valve body.

new chinese motors are only $90. They are much better built than the chinese valve bodies. Still not as good as the US products but certainly more than good enough for freshwater use. when you get back to civilization you should order one. The one you have now might leak water into system and end up costing you hundreds $$ and a big chunk of time.

Re: 88 Force 85hp trim no up and down but motor runs

Thanks RRitt, I snugged the two bolts and ran it for a second to make sure it dropped down into the cam then tighten up. Left the pump on the boat because I didn't have the proper wrench to get the front line off so had to work at the boat. I drained the oil out and put in 30wt in. Couldn't find 20wt. If not good enough I can siphon some out and put in some 10wt. Brushes still have good meat on them. I sealed the o rings with caulking so not to get water in (did not overkill in case I need to disassemble). 1/8 of the shaft was chewed up so I took 1/8 off the motor housing. I was wondering if I should take off another 1/16 for good measure. It's running like new but don't like the soft metal in the shaft There is about a 1/32 play in the shaft end to seat.
Hope this thread helps some Force people out there for a quick fix.
