I just got this motor running, starts right up (haven't chked compression), idles great, smoothly goes to/at full open. The problem is it has no guts. Full open is very doggy! I have the plugs gapped pretty wide, and don't know the right setting. Also, if I cleaned the high speed jet, could this solve the problem? It runs very smooth at its doggy top end, and the linkage shows that it is at the top end...I would think if it had bad compression, it wouldn't start so quick....

I am not an expert but have seen engines with low compression fire right up and run great. However, once a load is placed on them, they basically roll right over. I'd get a compression test on it and that will give you a good starting point. My 70hp is at 115-118 and puts out decent power.

You left out the most important piece of information: What style and size of boat? What is the average load?

Next, tell us what prop you are using. It will be 10 3/8 diameter by 11, 12, 13, or so pitch and should be marked on the prop somewhere. If you are overpropping that little 2 cylinder engine, It just will not perform well.

50 Hp is only 50 HP and can only do so much. If you are powering a 20 footer with it it might not get on plane.

A 14 footer though, and we would expect a bit of performance unless you have it loaded down with maximum weight of persons and gear.

Now, just as an example: My 15 foot deep vee Glastron did 27 MPH top speed withan old Chryslwer 55 and just myself and two 6 gallon gas tanks as the load.
