88 hp Johnson (1993) shift rod question

I dropped the lower unit to change the impeller and after putting it back on I can't seem to get the shift rod connected back correctly. The prop either spins freely or is in gear, but not at the right positions on the throttle/shift body on the console. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to try, or do I have to drop the lower unit again? Thanks for any help.

I made the mistake of messing (turning) that thing a few times on my 1988 120 Evinrude. There are specs in the manual for shift rod height. You will probably have to drop it again, put it in neutral and check the height of it. I had mine off several times before I got it right, if that's any consolidation to ya...........
