I am considering buying a used lower unit for a 96 Johnson 88 spl. The bottom tip of the skeg below the propeller is broke off about an inch. Is that something that will cause me trouble or is it cosmetic?

If it's only an inch or so, it won't make any difference at all.

I lost about the same amount once and just took a grinder and blended it all back to shape and then primed and painted it. Couldn't tell the difference in operation at all.

That lower skeg is really a prop protector. Doesn't do much else. You won't need it, unless you fish in shallow areas and are prone to dinging up the prop on occasion. Most marine dealerships have replacement skegs which can be welded onto the remaining skeg. After some smoothing and paint, you will think it's brand new.

As long as the skeg isn't bent you should be okay. A grinder and some paint should be just fine.

Just file it round again and forget it happened, I have run a lower with 1'' long skeg and not noticed the difference.
