Let me start by saying until a week ago, I had NO basic knowledge of (2-stroke) engines. I bought a 89 javelin with 88 johnson 110. It wasn't running at the time. Thanks to the fellows here on this site, I have rebuilt the carbs, flushed oil and fuel lines, replaced the water pump, done compression, spark test, and replaced the oil in the foot. I took it on a test run (up river) it ran like a new one up to about 2 miles, then lost power and would not stay running. I could choke it and hobbled it back down stream, then at last moment, it started running great again, except the no oil alarm started beeping. I didn't panic yet, just got her home and done my research on here. Traced it to water in the oil tank. removed and cleaned oil tank, lines, and the vro, drained carb bowls, went ahead and mixed 50:1 in fuel tank,(just incase) primed everything and she runs great. I havn't been able to test run yet, but willing to bet she's fixed. The only thing I havn't done yet, that I can think of, is replacing the t-stats. From what I can tell, I think the power head has to be lifted? ... I guess my question is, what is the procedure for changing the thermastats?, and is there anything else I should do maintenance wise?

Thanks fellows for all your help.

You don't want to (or need to) remove the powerhead to service the thermostats. You should purchase a Sierra kit # 18-3673, which has all of the parts that should be needed.

The thermostats are located behind the cover centered below the cylinder heads; The two large hoses run to it.

You will need to remove three screws; the system is spring loaded.

That is what my diagram showed too, but I started taking the exhaust cover, or what ever, and happen to look inside under the head and seen what I was trying to get too. the problem is the lower half of the eng compartment is where the t-stat housing is located, not behind the middle compartment housing. do I remove the exhaust cover, and unbolt the thermastat housing from underneath? then take housing apart? I can't get to those 3 bolts because of the lower eng compartment housing.

thanks for the kit info

Take the rear cover off (under the lower cowl) it will make it easier to see what you are doing.
