Hello, just bought another motor from a friend of mine, the motor has been sitting for about 5 years so I thought I'd better put a water pump in it. After pulling the lower unit down and removing the water pump I noticed that there is a piece of wall missing where the water pump meets the exhaust tunnel. Is this common and what can I do to make the water pump seal? I thought about putting the water pump on and then smearing a little rtv to seal the hole. The hole is about the size of a pea. Thanks in advance.

Im assuming you are referring to the impeller housing? If I am correct, than no, you cannot patch that, you will need a full water pump kit. I would also get some new t stats, and while the lu is down, blast some compressed air up the water line , making sure it exits at the t stat housing. Also clean out the tell tale line and nipple, little spiders love building nests in there when they sit. Clean out the water intake area and screens, and Im sure changing the plugs and rebuilding the carbs is also in order. There is a good thread in the FAQ entitled "Awakening a sleeping outboard" that you should read. Good luck.

I bought the whole water pump kit, the hole I'm talking about is the sealing surface, where the gaskets sits, the actual wall between the water pump and exhaust. This is the second time I've seen this on the 120's. I can take a picture but do not know how to post it.
