88 johnson 48 horse wont idle

Hello, I have a 88 johnson 48 horse 2 stroke that runs great wide open, but quits at slow rpms. what should I check first? Thanks .

Compression test - if that's all ok, then clean and rebuild the carb. Not a hard job on that model.
