I got my 88 Merc 20 on my Whaler after fixing I think the friction control. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=564318

I have hitched the engine up to the old pulley system which works fine but I have a problem after I go out for a cruise when I try to pull the engine back up I have to pull out the tilt pin in order to do so. So I guess the engine is locking down as it should, but I see no release lever..perhaps another missing part?

Also part #30,

http://www.**********/parts/search/Merc/Mercury/1988/1020211BD/SWIVEL BRACKET ASSEMBLY/parts.html

Stays vertical, but looks like it could flip out horizontal. I just don't understand it.

Thanks much,

Replaced the above mentioned part. I understand what it does, just pushes the engine out a bit for shallow water.

I still have no idea about how to raise this engine w/o pulling out the tilt pin?

Anyone?

Found the answer as I was installing a new impeller, the shift shaft#26 needs to go thru an rod reverse hook#19 2nd schematic that works as release, a washer sits on a detent and actuates the claw that holds the tilt pin. It had no washer before.

Great! Nothing like an IPB, especially on a vintage engine.
