88 Merc Reverse Issue

I've got an 88' Mercury 25 with a tiller. The shifting cables are tied in with the throttle on this model. The engine runs great, and the forward gear engages fine, but it grinds when shifting into reverse. I have adjusted the linkage cables, but I haven't been able to get the thing to engage in reverse. Do you have any idea what this may be? Am I looking at new gears in the foot, or am I over-looking something?

If I have to take it to the shop, what cost am I looking at to have the foot rebuilt. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Before jumping into the lu, I would get a manual and make sure the cables are adjusted properly.

Thanks - I've got a service manual ordered. That will be my first route of attack is adjusting the cables out. Has anyone paid to have any lower unit work done? What cost will I be looking at if so?

Ok, after getting the manual, and tinkering with the cables, I've found that the problem is most definitely the reverse gear and clutch. I've never pulled the prop-shaft on a lower unit, and need some help.:redface: Shop said it would be at least 700.00 for the fix, and I'm cheap!

I removed the prop, seal, and the "ring" with three screws in it around the "bearing carrier"? There is a black metal housing around the propshaft with three "tabs" or ears on it. There are two arrows on it - one points counter-clockwise, and says "on", and the other clock-wise and says "off". I made a tool to fit on the tabs, and tried to turn it both directions, to no avail.

Does this require heat? Or does it pull strait out? What am I missing here? Thanks again!
