Well, I think you already determined that right?

Can you turn the driveshaft? Put the drive in neutral first.

I Can't figure out how to separate the upper and lower units so I am not sure yet which is bad (if not both).

You can take off the top cover and take a look inside at the top gears if you want. You need am OEM manual if you want to go further.

Just be realistic here...you aren't going to be able to fix this yourself. Best to let someone with all the proper tools and knowhow to take it from here or find a used or rebuilt unit.

When you do get your drive fixed, learn how to properly fill these things. They are different than all the other drives.

Just got off the phone with local boat guy. He's gonna fix it for me and show me how to fill it.

Make sure he has worked on Cobras before.

Good luck!

Before you take it out, ALWAYS check the level of the gear oil. There is a little dipstick on the top of the drive. You can also top it off there.
