88 OMC Cobra - Seperate lower & upper

I have the manual and am having difficulty seperating the lower unit from the upper unit. We have all the bolts out and the unit can drop down about 1 to 2 inches. No matter what we do we can not rotate the shift rod to allow the unit to come apart. Anyone have any shortcuts or ideas? (What gear should the shift be in by the way?)

The shift rod end fits through the exhaust opening, you have to rotate it 90 degrees port and it just clears and it doesn't matter what gear your in.

Why not pull the drive as one unit then separate if needed?

Woe wait a minute! I was under the impression the drive was already off, no way will it seperate still attached because the shift lever is still engaged to the shift rod. You have to pull the whole drive off first to seperate the lower.

I hope he has the drive off!:eek:
The question about what gear had me thinking it is still on the boat...

Ok, the manual says that the upper unit does not have to be pulled to remove the lower unit????

you will bend the shift rod if you keep yanking on it and they are about 80 bucks or so. Get the omc manual....

Must be a Seloc or Clymers manual....:rolleyes:

I do not ever remember reading that in the OMC factory manual.
It will mess up the shift rod for sure!
