My mechanic checked the compression on my 1989 88hp rude when he cleaned the carbs for me and said that they checked 80 psi. He said this was fine for this engine. Is this OK?

Also, what should my RPMS be at take-off?

Well well...........80 psi is very low.
Ask your mechanic, under what condition he have taken the compression test.
If the motor was cold, and the control-handle was in pos. neutrail, the he would get a very low result.
The motor should be warm, and thottle arm at full speed when taking the compression test, other wice the result will be 20-30 psi lower.

on a two stroke it usually does not matter on the throttle position nor hot nor cold. however if one is done the rest need to be done the same way. that cross flow usually comes in a bit higher.. we need to see the spread from highest to lowest,. the spread tells the story.

He said, all cylinders checked 80 psi with very little variance

I would not be concerned on the compression if the performance is OK. You might do a deacrb to free up an rings that are sticking.

On the rpms my 1987 110s call for around 750 for idle and 5500 at WOT.

WOT is around 5500 when I am alone. Having trouble getting out of the hole. Thought compression might be the problem. Going to do a decarb to see if it helps.

Re: 88 Rude Compression

I purchased a compression gauge and checked the compression myself. They checked 113, 110, 112,110 respectively. Thanks to everyone for your input. He must have checked it cold.

Hello Mean15,

I also own a 1989 88 horsepower Evinrude SPL V-4 outboard. My motor has a 12 3/4 X 21 prop on it and goes 47 MPH at WOT on a 1989 15 1/2 footer ski boat. Is that sound right to you? I was just curious. I don't have a tachometer guage on my boat so I don't know how many RPM's it is turning at WOT.

Just as a matter of curiousity, did you test cold and compare to warm? it would be interesting to know if your difference with mechanic is the warm vs. cold or just because your gauge is different.

My engine only turns 5000 with the 13.5 x 18 and runs 42GPS. Have you checked your speed with your speedometer or GPS?

I checked it with a pitot speedometer. I don't think these are the most acurate speedometers. So I don't know really how fast she goes it could be less or more. I don't have a tach or GPS on my boat.

What kind of prop are you running? That is a very good speed if it is accurate.

Re: 88 Rude Compression

Mean15, with a (lugging) top rpm of only 5000, your holeshot would naturally be bad. For best performance and logest life that motor should turn 5800 at wot with an average load.

We need to check the tach. It seems to be reading low. With an 18" pitch at 5000, youre theoritical speed is 43. So if youre going 42 that would put your slip at less than 3%. Not very likely.

By any chance is your tach a Teleflex?

Dhadley, Yes it is a Teleflex set on 6 and the owners manual shows 4500-5500 WOT. If I change my tach, should I get one that goes to 6000 rpms or 8000 and what brand do you recommend?

It looks like OMC tachs gives better readings form these motors. Or get a Tiny Tach for testing purposes only, will give you a digital exact result, only by wrapping a wire around a spark plug lead. Search on the net for Tiny Tach, only few $
