Re: '88 Seebold 21' I/O Partial Restoration

Thanks for the Rustoleum advice Woodonglass....will roll on a waxed layer and also use the primer.

Those kind of T-Nuts are great....I'm using them for my front pedestal seats. Problem is I can't locate them with enough confidence for the rear bench seat without installing it...which I can't really do very well without sealing up the deck. The thread-in type can be installed in the finished deck, and also can be glued in with 5200 so they seal up better. Probably less pull-out strength, but its a bench seat so nowhere near the loads expected with a pedestal seat.

Trying to move to machine screws for everything, and thru-bolting where ever possible. I always find myself needing to go around and tighten up all the wood screws 2-3 times a season.

I'll probably just install everything with regular screws to get back in the water, and install these inserts next time I have it apart.

Will the back of the bench seat extend to the gunwales?

Have you considered "well nuts"? I've used them to hold my seats, toilet and gas tank down to the plywood floor of my Starcraft. Made of rubber, with a brass thread, the rubber compresses to seal the hole. The 1/4"-20's that I used insert in a 1/2" drilled hole up to a shoulder that creates just a slight space off the floor between components, depending upon how tight you draw them down. They are not cheap. One caution though, make sure you get ones that are on the long side. I tried 3/4" long in 1/2" plywood which doesn't allow for enough rubber expansion. I've managed to find longer ones and will be replacing them this year as one seat worked loose. - Grandad

WOG...yes, the bench seat goes all the way to the gunwales. Thanks for the advice on painting the bilge with Rustoleum...worked great!

Grandad...thanks for the link...I'll be trying the screw-in version this week and it that doesn't work out, I'll try these. Thanks for the advice about screw length.

Picture Update....Almost Done

Picture Update....Almost Done

All old glass ground out and hull cleaned up for fresh glass work...

You all know the grinding is the worst...the family made me a cake to celebrate its completion...

Fresh layer of 1708 on the hull, and laminated marine plywood stringers and bulkheads filetted in...

1st layer of 1708 over stringers...

2 layers of 1708 over all stringers and bulkheads, also tabbed the corners for better sealing. My technique got better as I went...but overall it came out pretty well with minimal bubbles and defects. The lines down the middle of the stringers were an attempt to center the cloth over the middle of the stringers. Worked OK but there's probably a better way...

Added an elevated battery box mount also...

Preping the new gas tank for installation. As discussed above, it was not foamed back in...instead we glued Neoprene strips to the tank with 5200 and those will sit on the hul (no glue to hull) and allow airflow around the tank...

Fresh coat of paint in the bilge. Used Rustoleum with enamal hardner over rusty metal primer. Happy enough with the results. Its just a utility paint job to seal the fiberglass.

New tank installed. Secured with 1/2" plywood covered with 3/4 oz mat and screwed to cleats on the side of the stringers...

Added cleats around perimeter of cut-out to screw new deck to:

New deck installed (5/8" AC Fir plywood coated with 17 oz cloth on bottom and 1708 on top...cut to size after being glassed on both sides). Also freshened the existing deck with a layer of 1708.

Finally out of the garage!!

Put the interior back in and made it to the July 3th fireworks over Lake Champlain...kids were thrilled!

I cheated a little to score the fireworks voyage...the final floor isn't in yet. We're installing a one-piece Londeck vinyl deck sole. This will provide a total seal for water coming through the deck...which is good because this boat will be used for water sports quite a bit. Working on it this week....pics coming soon.

Floored...

Floored...

Using a flooring called Londeck (link above) so that we have a 100% water sealed deck. It came as a 5'x7' sheet on a roll.

Made a template using contractor paper and blue masking tape.

Cut the vinyl mat on my garage floor covered in paper. Key point...should have done it warm...but didn't. Would have been easier and more accurate to let it warm up in the sun first.

Re: Floored...

Glued it down with 3M 77 Spray Adhesive. It has plenty of stick-em, and should be removable should that be needed.

Overall we're happy with the results. It hides imperfections in the floor where the old and new wood didn't line up perfectly...although in the full sun and no interior you can see some print through.

We've used the boat 5 times, 3 times to the beach, tubing, etc...and so far happy with the flooring. Nice to be able to clean it with a brush instead of vacuum.

Couldn't resist the refuse portion of this entertainment...here's my "keeper" (you know...those things you can't throw out until you're done) trash:

This used to be my stringers!
