88 spl gear box removal

I'm trying to change the water pump on this 1988 88 SPL. I have the clymer manual, The gear box is lose except for the shift rod. Clymer says, on the V4 remove retaining clip on the shift linkage . Well I did that first, but now what? Nothing slides apart. It does not move. Seems to be solid. What is the clip doing? I'm baffled.
I need to sell this boat (16' starcraft ) so, help.

Anyone? I have read about it here and it just seems all you have to do is remove the clip and the rod comes off. So what am I missing? Should I go back to IOs.

Does the Lower Unit drop down any at all?

Its loss, but will drop at all. It will pivot side to side a little.

Also what is coming off when you remove the clip? As far as I can tell it is a solid rod that pivots under the motor behind the carbs and it is attached to the bell crank off the control cable.

OK I can see where the rod comes up through the bottom of the housing and connects to the pivot rod. So is this where it comes off? You can barley see it let alone remove it without taking off the carburetors.

1/4 inch drive, with a swivel. it is a pita.

So I am removing the stop on the port side of the shaft?

Ok I figured this out you remove the clip and press inward on the shifter plate and it is supposed to disconnect from the shifter rod. I can see it moving but it does not want come on done. Looks like I can not move it enough.
