88 SPL hydrofoil question

Hello all. New here and already need some advice. I want to install an SE Sport 300 hydrofoil on my Johnson 88 SPL but do not like the mounting instructions. If I follow them I would need to drill through the trim tab. I don`t really want to do this. Drilling through the trim tab just seems to me to be dangerous. I would need to trim the yoke of the hydrofoil about 3" to move it back far enough to clear the trim tab. I know the no drill mounting clip is available. Anyone installed the SE Sport on the 88SPL? Any advice?

Re: 88 SPL hydrofoil question

Thanks, but returning it is not an option since I bought it used, and there is already a swim platform w/ladder, and transducer mounted in the area needed for mounting trim tabs.

i wouldn't cut the trim tabs. if you think you can move the hydrofoil back without letting water flow through it where it shouldn't be i would do it. i use the whale tail and it works great even though i had to modify it a bit.

The trim tab wouldn`t need to be cut, just drill through the round disk portion that the center bolt goes through.

What problems are you having that you want the foil to help with?

Re: 88 SPL hydrofoil question

i just looked at mine and remembered that i had to drill through mine. it caused no problems. i just made sure that it was a slot so i could still turn the trim tab if i wanted.

Not really any problems, just want to try to get up on plane faster and stay there with less throttle and save some fuel.
AND
Thanks for the info on the drill through being OK to do. I`m gonna do it yes I am!!

I achieved the same results by going to a Solas Amita 4 prop, no drilling or mods required... ;)

Thanks, but so far this has been just a $10 investment.

It will sort help in doing those things, but its not the best way to get there. Tabs will be a much better option.

I have seen too many caviation plates broken by foils, I'd Craig's List the thing myself...

And a broken foil costs a bunch more than $10 to fix...

Amita prop was $90 bucks with free shipping...
