I started at 1:00pm, it's now 6:30pm and I can not get this lower unit to go back on. I replaced the pump impeller and it came off with no problems. I have lined the shaft up, used a small amount of grease on the splines, put some liquid soap on the shaft seal, lined up the shift linkage....

It seems to be binding up at the shaft splines. I tried turning the shaft and applying pressure, but it will just not go in.. Any suggestions??

Do you have the boat shifter in forward and the drive shift shaft in forward?????
Did you check the alignment? If it's out of alignment and you had any problems at all getting it off the boat, putting it back on will be almost impossible.

Hey Don,

Shifter is in nuetral, shaft is in neutral. There is a small amont of play in the coupler that attaches to the shifter pin on the lower unit.I can move this up and down about an 1/8 of an inch when it's in the "binded" position so I'm sure that it's in the drive shaft. Sorry if I made any typo's...arms are sore from holding lower unit up in air for 5 hours...

There's atleast part of the problem,........
Everything Should be in Forward...........Always Forward when working on Merc.s..........

If you took it off with it in neutral, then the shift shaft in the drive is probably bent and you won't get it to line up.
Another example of working without a service manual when you're not sure or don't know how to do the job properly.

Thanks Don,

I'm really glad that you are here to to post your wisdom. I might have screwed this up, but you didnt read the post to close because the shift linkage lines up PERFECTLY. You should be glad your in Alaska because if tried to rub dog **** in my nose locally, you get your *** kicked.

Did it Work,..???.......

Don't forget the Water Tube,.......
The Quad Ring,.....(A dab of Grease holds it pretty good)
Keep Everything in Forward,..... (I use a Bungie Cord wrapped around the drive to Hold the prop in Forward)
Along with the shiftshaft,+ the driveshaft.....

Good Luck.......

Re: 888 Lower unit will not go back on

Well, lower unit is back in place. Pumps water great. Now all I have to do is replace all the hoses that are leaking which = every single one. No problem on the beer Don. I'll even buy, that way you can save your money for one of them mail-order brides you guys from Alaska have to have shipped in...

Money...... What the He11 is that, all we got up here is gold nuggets we use for tradin and throwing at people. Only throw the small fist sized ones at strangers...... wouldn't wanna hurt em none.
Far as the mail-order brides, never heard of it before, sounds like it could catch on though. Not sure what the wife would say, but might be worth a try. You guys from St Louie seem pretty up on that kind of thing, any preferences you could pass on? Ahhhhh never mind, wrong forum for that. Besides JB might just give us both the boot if we don't settle down. So I'll just sign off on this thread and wish you good luck......
