:'( Hello,

I just recently bought a 1973 I/O Merc on a 18ft tri-hull.

It ran fine till my son took it out and now it won't shift out of neutral unless you assit it. Push forward and the cable pushes the transmission to the right but not far enough, if you put your finger back there and move it about a 16th of an inch it goes into gear. The same for reverse just the opposite way a 16th. It has a Marmac control box,I took the lower cable off and it seems fine. I wanted to replace that cable but there are no Marmacs anymore since Teleflex bought them out. I'ved tried to adjust the settings but no luck. Once in gear either way it runs fine, it's just hard to dock without reverse or forward unless you help it out. I don't think it is the cable from the shiftplate to the lower unit but what do I know. Any help would really be aooreciated.

There are a couple possibilities:

1) Your shift cable to the drive is failing. The housing breaks down which causes a lot of lost motion which results in lower throw in the drive.(most likely)

2) Your control has more lost motion than it used to have because of wear.

Thanks for the advice.

Is the cable to the drive hard to replace? How much time is involved or would it be better to have a shop take care of it?

I had the marmac control on my 20 starcraft tri hull

It uses a slide style adjustment for throw on the back of the shifter. I would check to see if the 2 screws that set the adjustment have come loose before I spent money on any parts.
