888 Trim question. Confused!

I have just realized that since I brought the boat home from it's 7 year nap in storage, the lower unit has been at about 3/4 up position. After I got the engine running, I tried the trim and heard but did not witness the trim operate. When removing the gear case to change the impeller, I had to lift (physically) the unit to get gear case off and hold it up with a strap during replacement. All the while I was able to again lower it with strap to get case together. I again raised it with strap to see the shift lever position. Now that it is back together, It stays back up at 3/4 up position! Why? And is this normal that with gear case loosened from drive case, that the trim will not hold in up position?

Well my rams are attached to the upper half and I never unhooked them.

Sounds like you're saying the trim has lowered itself while in storage. I would go ahead and check the level of the fluid in the pump, and maybe even go through the bleeding procedure listed in the manual.

No, actually what I am saying is that since I brought it home, trim was at 3/4 UP. It has stayed that way until the day that we brought the engine to life. I tried the trim button but was not really concerned with it at the time due to the fact that I was excited that the engine ran so well. I then went to drop gear case (lower half) off to change impeller. THEN is when I noticed that I had to lift the unit physically and hold it with a strap to provide clearance to drop gear case out of upper half of unit. During my week and a half ordeal of trying to get the lower back onto the upper (reasons told in other post) I had to again, physically lift and lower the unit (with a strap to hold it) to get the lower under the upper. After getting both mated and secured, I released my strap and low and behold, the damn thing stayed UP where it had been 2 weeks earlier! As I stated, during the repair procedure, the upper half of the unit (with rams attached) would fall to the down position unless held up. Once it was re-assembled it stays up. I will check and probably bleed the system but I just wondered why it would behave like there was no trim holding it while taken apart and as soon as it is together, it acts somewhat normal again?

I would imagine it was a fluke that it stayed up, or between you operating the pump briefly and then moving the unit up/down by hand with the strap possibly worked some air out of the lines. I would still run through the bleeding proceedure if I were you. It take less than 30 minutes with two people and ensures that all of the air gets worked out. It only involves removing the lines on the trim rams one at a time and running the pump briefly. You just have to make sure the fluid reservoir is kept full after each cycle of the trim.

Does (or should) the trim pump work without the engine running?
