Measure from the inside of the "clamp" where it sits on the top of the transom to the anti-ventilation plate (often incorrectly called a "cavitation plate"), Rusltn.

Re: 88hp 1988 john

I am told my power head needs rebuilt and i have found another that is 85hp, not sure of model, however he believes it is a 1985. What year models will change out with mine and how do i determine year model by the model/serial #'s. This motor has not been ran in 2 to 3 years. What is best process to get it ready to run.
Thanks
RG

To start with, there is no 85HP in 1985. Here is a chart that will help you read the recreational model numbers from 1980 up. Click it to enlarge:

Re: 88hp 1988 john

Thanks for all the info. I can now find out year, however I still need for someone to tell me what year model power heads will fit on my 1988 88hp spl and best way to condition a engine that has sat for 2+ years before trying to start it. Like do I put oil or wd 40 in cylinders and how long to let it sit before trying to crank etc.
Thanks
Again!
