The boat I'm pondering to buy has a 1989 E175 STL CEB. The engine runs on muffs but not in the water or under load.
The owner claimed the carbs needed to be cleaned or rebuilt, I asked why he though that. He said a engine technician said so and, yadda, yadda yadda..... Quote "The boat idles fine, when under power it loads up and misses. You can smell the excessive gas. It will foul the plugs. Change the plugs, and the scenario repeats. I'm not a boat mechanic, but have spoke to one and this is their recommendation."

Upon more conversion with the owner the VRO was removed and the engine was converted to premix because a piece to the oil pump broke off. The place that did the work removed all the fundamental VRO parts, I think the engine ran fine like that for a year and then the boat/engine sat for year or so.
So I had a 88 SPL that was easy to work on and really reliable on my starcraft. I can do the simple stuff, change the gear oil, rebuild/replace fuel pump and carbs, link and synch etc.
I plan on going down Saturday to take a look at it. I do plan on doing a compression check, anything else I should look at that would make me run?
