I have posted this just the other day, but so many people have posted that it has disappeared in the double digit page numbers. So, here goes:

Problem: When running wide open, in-river, the motor doesn't ever reach full horsepower, though all six cylinders are firing. In fact, we are getting less than half the power we're supposed to. The motor also bogs down and dies when trying to bring it back into neutral. Had this problem before putting in the new stator, voltage regulator, fuel pump. Could this mean a new timer base is in order, or is there a possibility that disabling the VRO has something to do with it? Also, i have removed the overheat thermostat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i have: spark on all six cylinders, great compression, and my carbs are spotless clean and not gummed up. I also have a new electric fuel pump, and a disabled/removed VRO system. I have replaced stator, flywheel magnets, powerpack, voltage regulator, put on a new electric fuel pump, and replaced the spark plugs.

Is that elec fuel pump a johnson stock part?

I dunno, you've changed so many parts its a bit muddled, you aren't doing yourself any favors not posting the engines history or reason for swapping so many parts.

You can't go wrong getting the factory service book and restoring everything to stock.

thanks jonesg,

elec fuel pump is not a stock johnson part. it's a standard auto fuel pump from advanced auto.

reason for replacing flywheel magnets, stator, stator tower/bearing assembly is because the flywheel magnets came off the flywheel destroying the stator and stator tower. bought new magnet kit, and threw down $40 on the aftermarket magnet locking kit that i drilled and tapped on the flywheel. this way, even if the glue cracks and break with heat over the years, the locks will keep the same thing from happening. definitely saved a lot of money there. having to replace the entire flywheel was an $1,100 price tag!

when i bought the boat, all the plugs were sparking, and the compression was great. i took out the VRO because i'd rather mix the fuel and oil myself...call me crazy! also disconnected the thermostat leads. figure as long as the pee hole is shooting water,i'd be good...but, after taking the boat out the first time, i came across the low rpm problem. took the flywheel off and discovered the magnet/stator/tower issue, and also checked the powerpack and voltage regulator. both were pretty much fried and not putting out a charge. replaced both power pack and regulator, and took the boat out again, with the same low rpm problem.

the fuel pump is really just a luxury for me..i hate the fuel ball, and figure that if the problem had anything at all to do with not getting enough fuel to the motor, this would remedy that anyways. i should say that i haven't taken the boat out since putting the new fuel pump on, but i'm pretty certain the low rpms are less to do with fuel, and more to do with some sort of overheat sensor, or maybe a bat timer base?

also, when i say low rpm, i'm talking about 2500 rpm's. i've read a lot about S.L.O.W. and all, and am wondering if this might have something to do with it. The thermostats, however, have been taken out and disconnected, with the same problem, so i'm at a loss.

so far i've replaced everything that's had a problem, but i know the timer base can show good with the ohm test, but fail under a load. does this sound like it might be a likely culprit? I'm really trying to get this boat going VERY soon, as my cash is running extremely thin, and i'm already over budget on what i was hoping was going to be a home run deal on the boat and motor.

Had same issue with a 89 - 175hp gt. Changed all the things you mentioned without any improvement. Get a spray bottle with mixed gas, remove air cover from front of motor. Have a buddy drive boat for you and spray gas directly into carbs. I did this and found out that top carb was not supplying gas to motor. Best to have a good secure hold inside the boat or you may slide out the back .

I am currently having this problem with a new to me '77 evinrude 55 hp. I'm guessing that the spraying had no effect in all the other cylinders? should you try this at idle or full power? what was preventing fuel from getting to that cylinder? my mechanic said my carbs are clean but I'm considering a seafoam decarb procedure to see if that helps.
