Hey guys. I was wondering if someone could let me know what all is included when a rebuilt powerhead is purchased. Are any of the electronics, flywheel, intake and/or carbs included? If this is the route that I choose to take over rebuilding my existing powerhead, what else should I do to ensure a good, strong running engine. Any other pros/cons for buying over rebuilding would be appreciated also. Thanks in advance for the help...Jon

I believe it's just a shortblock assembly. If your current powerhead has failed for some reason, then you'll need to troubleshoot why, or else the failure will happen again on the next powerhead. Best take the proper tuneup steps i.e. checking for spark, clean and overhaul carbs, waterpump impeller, thermostat.....those kinds of things before you go trying to fire up the new motor.

A "powerhead" for a V6 looper usually means the block, crank, rods, pistons, and heads. You use your intake & carbs and electronics.

A "dressed powerhead" means its a drop on, ready to fire. Fairly hard to come by unless used. Be careful.

Keep in mind that whatever caused the damage on yours is probably something your going to reuse. Figure out what caused your damage and correct it to avoid a repete performance.

Re: 89 200 hp power head

My old power head didnt have major damage that I know of. At the beginning of last season the compression was down to about 85 psi in all cylinders. By the end of the season, it was 50-60 pounds in all cylinders. It ran fine at idle but had absolutely no performance. It was getting increasingly harder to start and wasnt idling good at all. I think that I will go through the carbs and check the vro out just to make sure. Any other things to check out? I will probably buy a powerhead from one of the vendors here on Iboats, swap out all of the parts and then have my mechanic check it over to be sure.

Well, I would say pop the heads and have a look see at the cylinders for scoring. Maybe the motor needs a serious decarb, the rings may be coked up. Coking will lead to ring failure and cylinder damage. The lower compression will make it harder to start. The drop in compression across the board is suspicious, normally folks complain of one or maybe two of the cylinders.

What kind of RPM's was it running at last season, when it started to decline?

Re: 89 200 hp power head

This is basically the whole story. It is an 89 200 evinrude on an 89 Stratos 20' boat with a 5inch manual jackplate. It has a 25 pitch 4 blade stainless steel prop (I havent been able to find a name on it). At the beginning of the season, it seemed to run good, about 5500 rpm. It started ok, and would top out at 56-58 mph (gps). I used it on a fishing trip all day everyday for 2 weeks in June and all was well. I didnt use it again until August and it wouldnt even get onto plane and wouldnt idle. It was getting harder to start when cold. So I brought it back home and started checking it out. That is when I found the low compression. I did a decarb several times with the Evinrude stuff, the name of it escapes me, but it didnt help out with compression.I pulled the heads, but nothing jumped out at me as far as scoring or anything. I thought that it should have had more acceleration and alittle more top end, but it ran pretty good. That is all that I can think of, but if you need more info. I will do the best I can. Thanks
