Can anyone tell me what is considered good compression for an '89 225 looper. Here's what I have right now.

Port Starboard
80 85
78 85
85 85

It wont idle.

If I replace the rings, what kind of compression should i be expecing?

Thats a bit low but not bad. I'd do a good decarb, especially if the top rpms are below 5500, and try again. As long as the compression is within 15 lbs you're OK. We ususlly see numbers in the 90-95 range.

As for it not idleing, that could be a lot of things. Without any background it's hard to say. If you have good timed spark and clean carbs it should idle. If it's been sitting I'd start with a good bath of the carb bodies and throttle plate bodies.

The boat was given to me right after hurricane charley. It took water throught the carbs and two of the piston rods rusted to the crank. I replaced the crank and the rods, took out each piston and decarbed them completly.

I've also soaked the carbs and blew them all clean with compressed air. I replaced all the manifold and intake gaskets. It just wont idle when its in the water. I dont get it.

I'm thinking I'll replace the rings to raise the compression. Is there anything special i should be looking for while I'm in there?
