Question:
I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri 5.0 with a Ford 302. The Boat has been
setting for about a year. The problem is that the Motor will Not start,
it turns over and back fires through the carb? Dose any buddy have
any ideas? Please let Me know.
Thank You!

Yes, I did a complete tune up last time we had her in the Water.
The Motor ran great, it was just hard to start?

Well, you say it has been sitting for a year, and that it was tuned up last time it was in the water.
So it has had a year to corrode the distributor cap and rotor, points (I'm guessing on an 89 Ford) to corrode, collect water in the fuel, and ignition wires to dry rot among other things.
And then you also say that after the tune up it was hard to start so it all ready had some issues going on when parked.
Boats rarely heal themselves, they tend to get worse.
You need to get some fresh fuel in it, change the water seperating fuel filter, and check all componets of the ignition system.

Yes, I replaced the fuel in the tank with 92 Octane and I'll replace the fuel filter again. She has electronic ignition and I replaced the cap and rotor and
changed to plugs. The Motor and components look great. As soon as it gets
a little cooler out here, I'll try to fire her up again and let you know how it goes. Today it's going to be 115!. Hey, do you think it could be the timing?
Thank You!

Hey bond-o,
Do you have any more ideas to what may be the problem? The kids want to
go to the river for the 4th of July and I really want to salve this problem.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.
Thank You!

A tune up also involves checking the timing, among other things.

Popping back thru the carb can be a lean fuel condition or the distributor timing is off. Check the timing again even if you did for the tuneup. If you checked the timing during the tune up and now it is different then there could be a problem with the distributor or hold-down bracket. If you did not check it during the tuneup then you do not have a base for any changes that have occurred since it was run, but see how it runs (if it starts and runs) then check it again to see it it has changed.

The lean fuel condition could be from the fuel itself (water contamination) , or clogged filter, or bad pump any of those not allowing enough fuel into the carb or not a good fuel mix into the carb. Hopefully your fuel filter is the water separating type. If it is pull it off again trying very hard to keep it full, then dump the contents into a clear container to see if it is all fuel or has water in it. You can use a couple of heavy duty freezer bags to hold around it as you unsrew it and catch dripping fuel.

By the way, if the engine does not call out for 92 octane then the 92 you put in does not help "fix" the stale fuel. Just put in fresh fuel with whatever octane is called for. Those 302's may have to have the 92 if that is what is called for in the owner's manual, but if not then the extra cost and octane is not necessary.
