Marty.....you can take a piece of wood and place it against the ribs in the carrier and tap the end of the wood with a hammer to see if it is seated. If you got the retainer plates and bolts in and the plates are flat, I would think the carrier is in as far as it will go.

DO you still have the two small wedges that go on the top and bottom screw? The housing is not in far enough. When you reinstall the housing, coat the surface that touches the gearcase with gasket sealer, or heavy grease.
