My '89 48spl starts up when I start it, but dies in about 1 second. When it runs it runs strong. When I push the primer again it starts up for a second again. I've tried holding the primer in to keep it running, but that does not work. Any ideas?
Thanks,

check spark and compression. is fuel line connected correctly? arrow on bulb point toward motor. remove air silencer, and spray premixed fuel into carbs. i have a 89 48spl. 99% dirty carbs.

Thanks, Tashasdaddy,

All those things are fine, but I wonder about something else. Since it last ran I installed a water seperator filter assembly. Would this keep me from getting not enough gas?
thanks,

when you installed the filter did you fill the canister with fuel, before installing. the bulb could be sucking air out of the cansiter.

I put the cannister/filter on past the primer bulb so the bulb is only sucking from the tank. It gets enough gas to the engine to fire it with the choke primer, but doesn't stay running. How do I check the fuel pump?
Thanks again,

i've always had the filter bulb motor. try taking the filter out of the system, see if it will start. you can use a small pipe for the temporary splice.

I installed my filter near the tank before the bulb.
TD has a good idea, bypass the filter and see..
Have someone squeeze the bulb when you start it and see what happens too..

Re: '89 48spl starts and dies

I just started having the same problem with my Merc '85 150. It will start right up, run for about 30 seconds, then die like it was out of gas. I'll change out the fuel filter/separator and check the fuel line for air leaks. I run Seafoam in the gas all year round, so I don't think the carbs are grungy.

I'll update once I get the work done.
