So I bought a new t-stat assy. for my Evinrude E70TLCEM. The parts lists calls for # 0394409. I was given part # 0434137 and told that this supercedes the other part #. It looks completely different and I need some help in figuring out how this is supposed to go in where the old came out. Any help is appreciated. I can post pics if needed.

Re: '89 70 Evinrude T-stat question

Thank you, I did already get that far. Take a look at these and please someone help. What are the threads for on the new one?

is it possible i have had the wrong t-stat on here (it's run well for three years)
maybe the powerhead was once replaced with something else?

i cannot figure out how to get this one in. i am no boat mechanic but i am no mouth breather either

i looked at 70 Johnsons and Evinrudes from 86 to 91 and they all use the same t-stat mentioned in my first post

new white

old brown

Re: '89 70 Evinrude T-stat question

i have never hit one. but my guess it is a one piece replacement for the tstat and vernatherm. 37,38, 39 in the diagram. that is all i can figure. did a lot more research.

Re: '89 70 Evinrude T-stat question

Just installed a new thermostat in a '91 and it is the unit pictured on the left.
I think they gave you the wrong thermostat. The one they gave you will require a different spring and possibly a different seal, that is if it will fit. The threaded bit has no use as far as I can see.

Re: '89 70 Evinrude T-stat question

you said the white one on the left is the one you have?

I guess I have been running this thing for three years with the wrong t-stat

your correct i cannot get the new one in because the spring (old) is too long and does not rest properly on the end of the assembly

both seem to fit into the seal correctly but i think the new model would allow more water to pass

i am still toying with the idea that the powerhead might not be the original one but the only number on it i found was J70TLOUR. i again stress that I am no boat mechanic. this motor is not much to look at but it runs well and serves my puposes well

i am so stressed about something that should be so simple i am about to give up and have a mechanic finish tuning this thing up

i appreciate the input. my name is actually James R. too..... crazy
