I thought my starter was bad so I bought a new one and installed it but that didnt do the trick. If I run the motor for a while wide open going up or down the river then shut it off, it wont start. There is nothing there, no turning over not even a click. Thought it was the starter over heating but that didnt do it. could it be the starter solinoide? Or is there something else I should look at first. If I let it sit and do nothing to it for 20 to 30 minuets then it will start right up like there was nothing wrong. It seems like something is overheating and has to cool down for it to start again.
Thanks,

Need to do voltage checks when it acts up. Start at battery cables and work your way through the system. Make sure cable ends are clean and tight.

Check your cables for corrosion, the littlest amount and the starting system won't do anything. Next check the solenoid, power on one side constantly, check the 2 big and 2 small terminals for corrosion. One of the small terminals goes to ground and the other to the ignition switch. Get a testlight (connect it to the battery ground) and check both small terminals, one will be ground and the other will light up when the key is turned to the start position, check this when the problem happens. This happened on my boat, car type solenoids (the ford type) require the body to be grounded. The previous owner installed this type instead of a marine solenoid and it became ungrounded on the lake. Got towed back and discovered the error and ran a ground to the solenoid body. Just a starting point for you.

check your battery cables for nick and corrosion from the inside out.

I went and cleaned all the connections, they didnt look too bad. I bought a tester for a continuity test. Ran the boat in my yard and all seemed well so I took it down to the river and droppped it in. We didnt get going maybe five minuets and we shut the motor off (all at low no wake speed). Then we went to start it and it wouldnt do anything again like last night. I put the tester on and there was good continuity around the solinoid and starter. One thing though when the tester would go back to zero to show continuity, it did that at the starter but at the solinoid it would want to go way beyond the zero but the needle couldnt go any farther. Is that a sign that something is wrong with the solinoid?

Thanks,

I replaced the solinoid and that didnt help. Now it wont start at all. Nothing when you turn the key. I cleaned all the connections and they are good. I have continuity at all points so ther is power but nothing happens when I turn the key
Thanks,

Test power going to the small posts at the top of the solenoid. One post either goes to ground or nothing and the other goes back to the ignition switch. When you turn the key power should go to one of the posts. A common problem is ground, a car type solenoid requires the bracket to be grounded , depending on where the solenoid is bolted it may not be getting a good ground, try running a piece of wire as a test from engine ground to the bracket on the solenoid.

Has to be your wiring just recheck everything closely and also make sure you hooked up the solenoid correctly.

Try replaceing the fuse in fuse holder, I had a customer with a 112 on a toon several years ago doing almost exactly the same as you describe, fuse was blown and would make connection when cold but when hot it would open, sort of like a flasher bulb on christmas lights. I lost a lot of sleep and a few handfuls of hair on that one. The thing that gave my problem away was the choke didnt work when it wouldnt start and ohm readings where weird. Fuse checked good with meter though but it had cooled down by the time I got to that step in troubleshooting.

I replaced the fuses, I took apart all the connections including the grounds and I still have nothing. Now it wont start at all anytime. I turn the key and there is nothing, not even a click. There is power to everything except the starter. I have continuity at the starter but no power there. There is power to the solonoid, to the key and back, to the power pack but not to the starter. I dont know what to do any more.
Thanks:confused:
