Brought it out saturday and the battery was dead, brought it home and jumped it from the truck and it turned over fine. I got a new battery sunday and now it won't turn over at all with the new battery or jumped from the truck, all I get is a click from the solenoid. Solenoid is hot at the battery side with the starter ground so I think I've got it down to the solenoid or starter.

I had the starter tested at auto zone and it's good, needs a new spring b/c the gear is stucking a bit, but it should turn over. and the solenoid seems ok(disconnected battery and starter and I got continuity across when I hit the starter switch) Am I missing something here, could I have burnt anything jumping from the truck, manual said it was ok to jump. I just don't see how something could have completely died in the few hours I was asleep.

Thanks in advance for any help.
-Steven

oh yeah if it makes any difference I cranked it with a rope and it runs fine.

one more question, do I have to get a solenoid for my specific motor, or are these pretty generic? It just seems like a part that wouldn't be much different.

Are you sure it's in nuetral and the throttle is below halfway,
when you are trying?

If you hear the solenoid click but no spin,

check if you have 12 volts coming out of the starter side of the solenoid while it is energised.

Could be a bad ground back to the battery also.

Blown or bad fuse connection in the engine harness somewhere?

Just a bad spot on the starter armature that will correct itself if turned mannually a partial rotation and tried again?

A loose or coroded connection somewhere.?

Just an intermittent set of contacts in the solenoid.

Yes it is preffered that you replace these components with similar. Non marine parts might look similar but not fit correctly.

I get 12v from the ground of the starter and every other ground to the battery side of the solenoid

>Blown or bad fuse connection in the engine >harness somewhere?
do you know where/what fuses are in there?

>Just a bad spot on the starter armature >that will correct itself if turned >mannually a partial rotation and tried >again?
I've moved it quite a bit and removed it and had it tested.

>A loose or coroded connection somewhere.?
Everything looks good, and I get power almost everywhere

>Just an intermittent set of contacts in the >solenoid.
I hope this is it, I would just get a new one, but it won't even turn over if I bypass the solenoid, it's like I'm ruling out every part.

Thanks for your reply and let me know if you can think of anything else.
-Steven

Truly if your starter, battery and relay are good, then I would be betting on corroded connections. To draw the amperage needed to spin the starter, contact surface area matters. Work your way from the battery and back and clean and inspect them. Measuring voltage will not always tell the entire tale.

If your starter is good and your battery is good, your relay clicks and the starter doesn't spin, then you've got wiring issues..
